The African word ‘Elimu’ means education. The Foundation of Elimu Mount Elgon is a non-profit organization with its aim being to offer financial and material needs for projects that support the education and professional training in the Mount Elgon Region (a border area between Uganda and Kenya) in Kenya.
Within the border area of Kenya and Uganda, in a desolated countryside territory with very poor infrastructure and 40 kilometers from the closest city of Kitale, is where the Dutch physician, Bea Andersen- Schipper, runs her practise. Besides her small, bustling clinic, Bea also heads an elementary school. The major need for any form of educational training for the local population was immediately apparent and therefore, in 1999, Bea set up a school in the area. The funding for Bea’s projects comes from both the Mount Elgon Trust and the foundation of Elimu Mount Elgon.
Our non-profit organization goes along with the goal of the UN millennium:
"All children will go to school before 2015"
The help consists of financial support for the building of school classrooms and sanitary facilities, and for the shipping of school supplies and materials which cannot be locally acquired.
Furthermore, the foundation supports individual students with study grants and by initiating and developing a tie between the Dutch and Kenyan schools.
Our projects focus on the following:
the Andersen Nursery and Primary School
the Chipchoina Nursery and Primary School
a trade school focused on the areas of construction and metalwork
a facility management school
study grants for promising students
working together and creating an educational bond with schools in The Netherlands
creating awareness by spreading information concerning the situation in Kenya
Our sister foundation, Stichting Ondersteuning Kitale (SOK), is also a non-profit organization (www.sokitale.nl) which supplies medical aid in the same local area. We have joined efforts with SOK, and as a result, the funding for any medical means is also done by the Mount Elgon Trust.
We are very thankful for all our sponsors and donations; all donations go directly to support the foundation. It is also possible to directly donate to a specific project, and if this is preferred, then please contact us for further details.
Thank you for your interest and support!
