Information on the activities of the Foundation

Dr. Bea Andersen

Bea Andersen is a physician from The Netherlands, who graduated in 1987 from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, and thereafter, received her diploma for Tropical Medicine in Antwerpen.

Bea has worked several years for ‘Artsen Zonder Grenzen’ (translated as ‘Physicians Without Boundaries’) in countries such as Sudan, Kenya and Bangladesh. In 1993, while in Kenya, Bea met her husband and settled down on his farm there. Bea almost immediately became interested and actively involved with the well-being of the local population there.

The foundation of Elimu Mount Elgon heartedly supports all of Bea’s projects.

Information about the local population and various projects.

Within the border area of Kenya and Uganda, in a desolated countryside territory with very poor infrastructure and 40 kilometers from the closest city of Kitale, is where the Dutch physician, Bea Andersen- Schipper, runs her practise. Besides her small, bustling clinic, Bea also heads an elementary school. The major need for any form of educational training for the local population was immediately apparent and therefore, in 1999, Bea set up a school in the area.
Andersen Nursery and Primary School is a private initiative of Bea and her husband. The school has evolved into a complete nursery and primary school with a total of 11 classes consisting of 660 children, which means there are 60 children per class. In 2003, a separate unit was built for illiterate students (consisting of 30 students) and since the beginning of 2005, another separate unit was built for children with learning disabilities (consisting of 15 children).
Another major concern and involvement of Bea’s is the integration of physically handicapped children at the Primary School in the nearby village of Endebess. Furthermore, Bea also supports the Primary School in the neighbouring village of Chepchoina, where 1200 children in abominabele circumstances are taught.
The foundation of Elimu Mount Elgon supports Bea in the form of financial help and the offering of material needs for various projects. This is where YOUR help and support are essential and play a key role.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to offer any kind of donation or other support.

In addition, the SOK is a sister foundation that gives support to Bea’s medical activities and needs. Please see www.sokitale.nl for further information.

The following is a list of projects which are supported by our foundation:

·      The expansion of 3 pre-school classrooms for the Andersen Nursery School, along with the renovation of the unit for handicapped children. The building for these projects can proceed due to a donation from our foundation of 6000 euros, and completion is expected in April 2006.

·      The interior layout for the toddler classrooms and the furniture for Andersen Nursery and Chepchoina Nursery.

·      The restoration and renovation of the buildings and sanitary facilities for the Chepchoina Nursery and Primary School.

·      The building of new classrooms for Chepchoina Nursery and Primary School.

·      The building and interior layout for Andersen Primary and Trade School with 5 classroom facilities. This should be completed by 2007, when the first 60 students will begin at Andersen Primary School, as the continuing education of these children is absolutely necessary. Elimu Mount Elgon has promised to supply the interior layout for this trade school. For the trade courses involving metal, electric, wood and leather, the foundation is in search of tools, machines, etc.

·      The establishment of a library is desired and, therefore, the search for English books, especially children's books, and also novels for adults is highly needed.

·      Games and other toys for indoor or outdoor activities, or leather soccer balls and slides are needed as they give so much joy to the children.

·      Various contributions and additional training for the teaching and medical personnel. The foundation funds the education of one of the medical officers at the clinic.

On behalf of “Elimu”, we thank you with all our heart for your kind and generous support.

Ms. Janephephar, head of Andersen Nursery and Primary school.
